Transsexual people experience severe psychological discomfort from the discrepancy between their sense of self and their registered gender and/or social expectations. This discomfort is called gender dysphoria, and can lead to serious consequences, including depression and suicide. Often the optimal solution to this problem is a transgender transition, including hormonal therapy and gender reassignment surgery. In many cases, a significant additional cause of severe stress in transgender people is discrimination and transphobia from others and society as a whole.
